¹ I have seen one Gujarātī inscription without vowels, which *may* be due to a Brahman. It is incised on the right hand gate post of the temple of Dharaṇīdhar at Dehemā in Northwestern Gujarat and omitting the date, runs thus: **तरख न फज अव न वव न रव हर ॥** Its meaning was interpreted to me, as follows: **तुरखनी फोज आवी ने वावनो राओ हार्यो** “The Musalman army came and the Rāo of Vāv was defeated.”
