Their Mantras and other sacred compositions may have remained unwritten somewhat longer. That is no more than might be expected, as the Brahmans had a great interest in [87] keeping their “great medicine” secret. And there are also several indications to this effect, such as the imprecations against copyists of the Veda and the general feeling, even among the heterodox sectarians, that sacred books ought to be preserved only orally.
