[^1): Profr. Goldstücker considered Pāṇini to have lived before Buddha ("Pāṇini's Place" pp. 225-227) chiefly on the ground that the sūtra viii., 2, 50 ("nirvāṇo 'vāte) does not provide for the peculiar Buddhist sense of nirvāṇa, and that therefore it is subsequent to Pāṇini. The same identical sūtra, however, occurs in the Grammar attributed to Çākaṭāyana (iv., 1, 249), and is explained by the commentator (Yaxavarman) in a manner that makes it appear as if Goldstücker's interpretation were too strict—avāte kartari | nirvāṇo muniḥ | nirvāṇaḥ pradīpaḥ | ‘avāta’ iti kim | nirvāto vātaḥ | nirvātam vātena |
