² MSS. written on this substance are said to be in existence, but I have not seen any. Cfr. Schlegel's Rāmāyaṇa I. pp. xv-xvi. A famous MS. on this substance is that of the Paippalāda çākhā of the Atharvaveda found lately in Cashmere. Dr. Bühler (*Journal Bombay As. Soc.* No. xxxiv. A. vol. xii. p. 29) calls the tree *Baetula Bhojpatra* and shows that the bark is common enough in Cashmere. However in considering a question such as this, it is necessary to remember that only indigenous products deserve mention, for in the earlier times commercial facilities did not exist. The oldest MS. yet found in India is on talipat leaves.
