³ The development of the Pahlavī from the early Aramaic character is traced by M. F. Lenormant in the "*Journal Asiatique*" for August and September 1865 (pp. 180-226). The resemblance between some of the Vaṭṭĕḻuttu letters and the corresponding Proto- and Persepolitan Pahlavi forms (as given by F. Lenormant) is very striking. Cfr. a; Pahlavī d with t; i; l (r); m; n; p; k; s with *s* etc. There is ample evidence as to trade between Persia and the W. Coast of India.
