The explanation is a remarkable one, but, thus, very limited in its results. Except, however, new and ample materials (from the early centuries B. C. and A. D.) be yet found for deciding the question, every explanation of the ultimate origin of the S. Indian system of notation must be regarded as merely a provisional hypothesis[^1).
