¹ Much controversy has been raised over the phrase, *Naṁda-rāja-ti-vasa-sata*, occurring in the Hathigumpha inscription. The phrase is ambiguous. Even if we accept the opinion that it refers to 300 years after Nandarāja, not much reliance can be placed on this round number 300. The actual time may be slightly more or less.
