B.C. 140 Patañjali, the grammarian, author of the *Mahābhāshya*, flourished about B.C. 140–120. Goldstücker and Bhandārkār have fixed Patañjali's date from passages in the *Mahābhāshya* which show him to have been contemporary with Menander and Pushyamitra. Patañjali was a native of Gonarda in Eastern India, and lived for a time in Kashmir. His mother's name was Goṇikā.—Goldstücker, *Pāṇini*, 234; *Lit. Rem.* i, 131 ff. LIA. ii, 485. BD. 8.
