With regard to methods of doing the hair, more is known of the styles favoured by the men than of those in vogue among the women, for the head-dresses worn by the female figurines prevent the hair from being seen. A piece of statuary exists, however, in which a woman’s curly hair hangs down in a mass at the back of the head, and a badly damaged head of a small steatite figure has exactly the same arrangement. The figures of goddesses on the amulets sometimes have a plait tied with a bow at the end, and as this is a favourite way of dressing the hair in modern India, it is unlikely that plaits were reserved exclusively for divinities.
