Small metal cones are worn to-day on the top of the head by women in the Punjab, and ornaments of this kind have been found among the hoards of jewellery unearthed at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa. These cones, which average 2·45 inches in height and two inches in diameter, are of gold, silver, copper, and faience, and have a loop soldered inside the tip, through which a lock of hair must have been passed to keep the ornament in place. Certain hollow hemispherical or cone-shaped objects, made of two, three, or even four pieces of shell carefully fitted together, seem to have served the same purpose. Several of the female figurines wear similar head ornaments.
