The pottery of Mohenjo-daro almost without exception has plain flat bases, though some are very narrow. The few ring bases discovered are always associated with handmade pottery, specimens of which are all small and, from their finish, appear to have been made and baked in the home. As before mentioned, most of the floors were made of hard earth or laid with brick, and were consequently quite unsuited for vessels with a rounded or pointed base. Where such bases do occur, as on some of the large storage jars, it is probable that special supports of wood or pottery were provided; pottery stands, which closely resemble those found in other countries, are not, however, very common in the Indus valley. Some of the storage jars, as we know, were partially buried in the earth.
