Copper, if not bronze, seems to have been used from the time of the foundation of Mohenjo-daro, but whether this was the case with earlier cities of the Indus valley remains to be proved, and this can only be done when other sites, built on higher ground and out of the reach of water, have been examined from top to bottom. It is, however, significant that no worked stone tools or implements, beyond simple ribbon flakes of flint (Pl. K, 3) and several roughly chipped objects resembling celts, also of the same material, have been unearthed at Mohenjo-daro. If stone implements had been in general use at the time of the foundation of the city, some specimens would almost inevitably have been carried up to a higher level, but so far no Neolithic remains have come to light at either site.
