This first volume, then, contains 1537 Indus seals and inscriptions physically existing in public collections in India. We have excluded the objects stolen from the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, Bombay, although photographs of these objects are available; they will be published as lost objects in the third volume. As far as possible, we have tried not to publish old photographs, but to procure new better ones. When originals almost certainly existing in Indian collections could not be located, however, we have resorted to reproductions. If better pictures of such objects are obtained later, they will be published in the third volume.
