An inscription at Tirupparankunram (No. *55*, ca. 1st century A.D.) refers to an *īḻa-kuṭumpikaṉ* (read *īḻa-*) 'a member of a family (*kuṭumpikaṉ*) of toddy-drawers (*īḻa-*)'. The name of the clan (*Īḻavar*) is derived from *īḻam* 'toddy'.
