The Mamandur inscription (No. 73, ca. 3rd century A.D.) near Kanchipuram refers to Kaṇimāṉ, 'the chieftain (*kōṉ*) who took Tēṉūr'. He was probably a local chieftain in this region before the Pallava occupation of Kanchipuram around the middle of the 3rd century A.D.
