¹ Symbol A occurs only with 'claws' and without 'feet' in Nos. *12*, *13*, *19* & *40-43*. It is likely, especially at Alagarmalai, that some of the occurrences are incompletely preserved. However, clear examples occurring in the pottery inscriptions from Uraiyur and Kodumanal confirm the existence of the variant without the 'feet'. See Fig. 5.12.
