As the palaeography of Brāhmī has been studied in several standard publications,⁶ the present study will concentrate on the special and less familiar aspects of Tamil-Brāhmī and trace the distinct course of its evolution into Early Vaṭṭeḻuttu. The study is based mostly on the stone inscriptions included in the present Corpus. However, the more recently discovered and still not adequately published pottery inscriptions and the Early Vaṭṭeḻuttu inscriptions at Pulankurichi have also been utilised to present a more complete picture of the palaeographic evolution.
