Perhaps one of the last known occurrences of *antai* as an independent word is found in an early medieval inscription, *ivvūr antai iḻaiyār pavaṇanti* 'Iḻaiyār Pavaṇanti, the *antai* of this village' (M.D. Sampath 1968: pp. 157-162, 8th cent. A.D. The reading was checked again from the estampage by Sampath at my request).
