**54.1 mārayatu** Read *mārāyatu* (*mārāyattu*); oblique form of *mārāyam* (n.) 'honour or title bestowed by the king' (*Tol. Poruḷ.* 63:5; *Cilap.* 25:142); here probably 'one so honoured'.-*tu* (LT *-ttu*) is the suffix of the oblique case. See section **4.6.10**.
