The name is of exceptional interest. Udayana was the hero of *Bṛhatkathā* which is said to have been composed in Paiśācī Pkt. by Guṇāḍhya. The work is not extant. It was rendered into Tamil with the title *Peruṅkatai* by Koṅkuvēḷir, a Jaina author. The present inscription which is much earlier, shows that the story of Udayana was known in the Tamil country and persons were named after him from an early period.
