The expression *muṉṟu* is not attested elsewhere; but cf. *muṉ* 'in front', *muṉṟ-il* 'space, front of a house'; *muṉṉu* 'to precede', *muntu* 'to come in front' (D. 5020a). The evidence indicates that *muṉṟil* is derived from *muṉṟu* + *il* though traditional grammarians derive *muṉṟil* from *il-muṉ* (*Tol. Eḻu.* 355; *Naṉṉ.* 238, comm., Mayilai.)
