In Mesopotamia such a sequence has been pretty well established to cover at least five prehistoric periods before the Early Dynastic period, about 2800 B.C., and this can be fairly closely correlated with a similar sequence in Persia and Syria. For the moment it will be instructive to look at the earliest of these farming communities in each area.
