But very soon there was permanent habitation on the top of the old camp-fires, with little houses of rooms set round a courtyard, one clearly recognizable as a kitchen, with its bread oven and storage jars still remaining, another the living-room, another a detached bake-house with two sunk storage bins for grain in the courtyard nearby. More than thirty such grain-storage bins were found in the area excavated, and they recall similar structures, probably of about the same age (or rather later), in Egypt. In this village too were found sickle-flints, like the Natufian ones already mentioned, which had been set in slightly curved wooden hafts. The houses had been built of the tempered mud which makes such an excellent building material all over the Orient.
