Although the economic structure of Sialk I in Persia is so similar, distinctions in pottery types, etc., make a complete equation with Hassuna I inadvisable, and the same applies to sites such as Mersin in Asia Minor and Ras Shamra in Syria. But the earliest level at Nineveh (Nineveh I) and perhaps that at Tepe Gawra (Gawra Archaic *f*) seem likely to be more strictly comparable. Of these sites, Sialk I alone has painted pottery, and on this point we must make a necessary digression.
