What blending of cultural traditions took place between the ancient peoples whose individuality is shown by their painted pottery and the newcomers, whose style of pot-making must indicate a sharply contrasted cultural heritage, we do not know, but from the amalgam painted styles of pottery certainly re-emerged, and in the probably rather short *Jemdet Nasr* period we find a characteristic ware with designs in black and plum red. This phase is recognizable at Ur, at Uruk (II–III), Gawra (VII–VIII), Uqair (II–IV), and other sites, and the Uruk innovations of writing and seal-making were developed. We are now approaching so near to the recorded history and king-lists of Mesopotamia.
