In E.D.I has been found at several sites in the Baghdad region a type of painted pottery called ‘Scarlet Ware’, with some affinities to its predecessor, Jemdet Nasr pottery, but with a bright scarlet paint instead of the deep plum red used in the earlier period. This pottery turns up again in Susa D, and we shall see that very important comparisons can be made between Scarlet Ware and certain pottery in South Baluchistan. Another link between Mesopotamia and Baluchistan in Early Dynastic times we shall see to be certain stone vessels with carved surface ornament which turn up in E.D.III, once in one of the famous ‘Royal Tombs’ of Ur, which must rank as the best known sites of ancient Sumer and belong to the E.D.III phase.
