Giyan seems the only site in Persia where a succession can be traced from cultures which can be equated with the prehistoric sequence of Mesopotamia to the Early Dynastic period and beyond. The beginning of Giyan IV seems contemporary with Susa D, and therefore with some phase or phases of the Early Dynastic period, and it probably ended in Akkadian or later times. Giyan III contains a cylinder-seal of a type known in the First Dynasty of Babylon (about 1800-1600 B.C.), and there may be a gap between its end and the beginning of Giyan II, which seems to go on to 1400. There may be another gap before Giyan I, which goes on to the introduction of iron, and includes the grey polished pottery already referred to in connexion with Hissar III and Anau III. The final occupation of Giyan (or rather its use as a cemetery) must be about 1300 B.C. or later.
