No inscription of more than twenty or so symbols is known, but it can be deduced that the language was read from right to left, though when a second line of inscription is present the *boustrophedon* practice, as known in early Greek, of reading the lines alternately from right to left and from left to right, seems to have been followed. Certain signs can be identified as normally coming either at the end or at the beginning of inscriptions, and others may represent numerals; there may have been some system of accents or diacritics used. The signs are of course not alphabetic, and by analogy they could represent either syllables, ideograms, or determinatives to indicate the class of thing to which the word belongs.
