One extremely interesting burial was found in 1946, in which the body, probably that of a girl, had been buried in a wooden coffin and wrapped in a shroud of reeds, of which traces still remained (Pl. 5). Such reed-shrouds or coffins are a fairly obvious form of protection for the corpse, and are known in Sumer in Early Dynastic and Akkadian times (that is, between about 2800 and 2000 B.C., and so contemporary with Harappā) and the use of such a mode of burial in the R 37 cemetery has been considered by Dr Wheeler to imply a link between the two civilizations.
