From Harappā, Mohenjo-daro and Chanhu-daro come bronze pins or rods ornamented in a distinctive manner either with spiral tops or with representations of animals. These seem to belong to a great province of barbarian metal-work which stretched from the Caucasus to Turkestan, around the northern fringes of the kingdoms of Sumer and Akkad, with its main phase of productivity round about 2000 B.C. or rather later, and the occurrence of these pins at various levels in the Indian sites implies that odd imports from the barbarous regions of Western Asia occasionally reached the otherwise almost closed kingdom of Harappā.
