And so, first, the people themselves. For evidence of the physical type and personal appearance of the Harappā folk we can turn to two sources – the actual remains of skeletons and the representations in stone sculpture and bronze-casting found on the excavated sites. About fifty skeletons or fragments of skeletons have been found at Mohenjo-daro, Harappā, and Chanhu-daro, in conditions which vary from ritual deposits to violent massacres in the final stages of the cities' history, and of these a certain number have been reported upon by anthropologists and anatomists. At Harappā the ‘R 37’ cemetery, belonging to the period of the city's flourishing occupation, has produced about 60 burials, but the anatomical reports on these have not yet appeared. But from the available evidence, mainly from Mohenjo-daro, we can see that more than one ethnic strain was present in the population.
