But there is another and a more primitive element represented in the Mohenjo-daro people. Three skulls belong to what has been classed as the Proto-Australoid group (the Veddoid type of some writers), and these have some claim to represent the aboriginal inhabitants of the country. Here, analogies lie with the Australian blackfellows and the Veddahs of Ceylon: current opinion tends to the view that Australia received her aboriginal population by migration through Ceylon and Melanesia from Southern India, where the type is well represented today. Of small stature, with a dark skin-colour approaching black, wavy or curly (but never frizzy) black hair, long heads, broad flat nose and fleshy, protruding lips, these people form the main element in the South and Central Indian aboriginal tribes of the present day, as well as largely constituting the so-called ‘exterior castes’ of Hindu society.
