The defences showed two phases of reconstruction. After the original work had weathered and suffered some damage, the burnt-brick revetment was rebuilt in first-class fashion (better than the original work) and thickened in some places - work evidently carried out at the height of the Harappā civilization. But in the second phase of rebuilding the north-west corner was reinforced by an additional salient and the two entrances of the western gate system were wholly or partially blocked. ‘In this late phase of the city,’ Wheeler remarks significantly, ‘the Harappans were on the defensive’.
