It has already been pointed out that a series of construction phases can be distinguished at Harappā and at Mohenjo-daro, but until the final and decadent phases of the sites’ occupations the original plans of buildings were, at least in the latter city, strictly followed, and consequently the street lay-out preserved throughout, although internal alteration and subdivision were often made to houses. The stratification is discussed in detail later in this chapter, and here it is sufficient to note that the material culture is so uniform that for our immediate purpose the entire accumulations of occupational and constructional debris on the two sites may be considered as a single entity, and architectural features described in terms applicable to the whole.
