This chapter has been restricted to the evidence of prehistoric archaeology for the movements affecting India in the middle of the second millennium B.C. But there is another part of the story to be told, based on the evidence of philology and on scraps of literary evidence: dangerous ground, full of quicksands and pitfalls which have too often trapped the unwary, and not infrequently the would-be wary too. The question of the dispersal of the speakers of languages within the Indo-European group, and of the arrival of the Aryan immigrants in Northern India, must be considered in connexion with the archaeological evidence.
