∗ The translations from the *Rigveda* are those of Griffiths (1896), but in a few instances, in consultation with Professor Dillon, I have ventured to substitute alternative words for his sometimes rather banal phraseology. While my interpretation of the *Rigveda* has been based on translations only, I feel that some attempt must be made by archaeologists who are not Sanskrit scholars to obtain at least the broad outlines of its significance.
