Little, again, can be gathered of clothing, except that it was mainly of woollen cloth. Clothes that were either embroidered or woven in ornamental patterns were worn by women, and a cloak or mantle was worn, probably by both sexes. We are reminded of the garment dyed red and purple and the cloak of brown wool found in one of the tombs contemporary with that of Maikop, at Tsarskaya in South Russia. It is interesting that the use of a turban (surely derived from the Harappā Culture) is mentioned only in texts from the Brāhmaṇas onwards. Men wear ear-ornaments in the Rigveda, and there is mention of an ornamental headdress for women, which the etymology suggests stood up like a ‘horn’, while gold was used for anklets and rings, neck-ornaments and others worn on the breast. Shaving is mentioned, and there are references to moustaches and beards - Indra is famous for his tawny beard.
