Stein’s campaigns were essentially those of reconnaissance: he made few excavations beyond trenching sites here and there, and collected mainly surface indications of ancient habitation in the form of the all-important potsherds which contribute so much to the archaeologist’s knowledge of the ancient Orient. But Hargreaves partially excavated a cemetery and a settlement in Baluchistan in 1925, and produced important evidence which amplified Stein’s own remarkable results.
