So prehistoric India may in its widest sense embrace all human communities in the sub-continent, from the Old Stone Age to somewhere near the Christian era, or in many regions well beyond this limit. The discovery and interpretation of Indian prehistory must therefore rely on the same methods as have been used in Europe to study the course of human development before the advent of written history (which as a rule begins with the incorporation of the region in question into the Roman Empire). These methods, the techniques of archaeology, are, in their distinctively scientific forms of the present day, of comparatively modern growth, though many aspects have been familiar to Englishmen since the eighteenth century.
