The final phases of the Palaeolithic period in India are still obscure. There seems to have been some continuance of the later Soan tradition in flake-tools with the characteristic technique of core preparation (the so-called Levallois technique) surviving in more than one area (the Punjab, the Narbada, and in South India) into the last Glacial period and possibly beyond, and it has been claimed that certain stone industries from Kurnool in the Dekkan and near Bombay represent a new type of tool based not on the massive flake but on the slender blade detached from a core.
