The Palaeolithic period is one of immense, monumental inanition over millennia, with human progress, as deduced from the tangible remains of man’s handiwork that have survived, making but the slowest imaginable moves. During the ‘Great Interglacial’ period, probably lasting for nearly 200,000 years, the changes in the type of tool manufactured are matters of archaeological minutiae which reveal a slow increase in mastery of the technique of fracturing and flaking stones to the required shape; if in the later Pleistocene there appears some acceleration in modifying tools and weapons, this is only on the geological time-scale in which fifty thousand years may become a significant period of change.
