Solar dates, *i.e.*, dates based solely on solar months, are in use in the Tamil and Malayalam tracts of Southern India (*i.e.*, in the Tamil Districts, in Malabar, in Travancore, and in Cochin) and in Bengal: elsewhere lunar dates are chiefly in use.
