Various abbreviations were often employed in the notation of dates. The seasons (in the older dating systems) were often abbreviated as *he* or *hema*, *va* or *vā*, and *gri* or *gī* for *hemanta*, *varṣā*, and *grīṣma* (or their Prakrit equivalents), respectively. The days of the bright (*śukla*/*śuddha*/*sita*) and dark (*kṛṣṇa*/*bahula*/*asita*) fortnights are commonly abbreviated as *śudi* or *sudi* (= *śukla-divase* etc.) and *badi*/*vadi* (= *bahula-divase* etc.) or *vadya*,⁴⁷ respectively. (For further examples of abbreviations, see BPLM 160 n. 5 and SIE 220.)
