Archaeological expeditions in Chinese Central Asia (i.e., the region of the Takla Makan Desert in the Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, formerly referred to as Chinese Turkestan) have yielded, besides a wealth of ancient literary documents in Sanskrit, hundreds of epigraphic and quasi-epigraphic texts in Indic scripts and languages.
