The Kaśākuḍi plates of A. D. 738-39 say that Mahēndra I defeated Pulakēśin II at Puḷḷalūra near Kāñchi. W. Chāḷukya records say that Pulakēśin II ‘made the leader of the Pallavas take refuge behind the ramparts of Kāñchi.’ But this is not a claim to have actually captured Kāñchi, which he would have done if victorious, and this leads to the supposition that he was really beaten back from Puḷḷalūra, after having advanced as far as that place.
