No. 1 Muddu made Mercara his capital in 1681. No. 6 Liṅga ousted Dēvappa by the support of Haidar Ali. When he died Haidar took Coorg. In 1782 the people of Coorg rebelled against Haidar, but were subdued by Tipu, who kept Vīra (No. 7) a prisoner. Vīra escaped in 1788, fled to the English for refuge and with their aid regained his throne. No. 10 Vīra is said to have been a 'Monster of Cruelty,' guilty of 'wholesale murders' and one who 'established a reign of terror in the country' (L. Rice). Coorg was taken under British protection by the request of the people.
