The family ruled the country west of the strong hill-fortress of Konḍavīḍu—hence their name ‘West of the hill.’ The first known chief, Buddha or Buddha I, obtained its territory from the Chaḷukya conqueror Kubja-Viṣṇuvardhana in the 7th century A.D. Nothing more is known till the early 12th century.
