From about A.D. 700 to 1052 the province was governed by a Pallava family, with occasional intrusion of Chāḷukya, Gaṅga and Chōḷa viceroys. After the battle of Koppam in 1052 it seems to have remained under Chāḷukya domination, but in 1079 we find a Pāṇḍya chief in possession, and a Pāṇḍya family ruled till about 1178 when the Hoysala king Baḷḷāḷa II seized Uchchangi.
