² Ep. Ind., Vol. I, pp. 81, 129, 163, etc. Kielhorn explains Karaṇika as ‘a writer of a karaṇa (a legal document)’. The Karaṇika is the same as Karaṇattān (Sanskrit Karaṇastha?) of Tamil inscriptions (Ep. Ind., Vol. XXV, p. 132), mentioned along with Kaṇakku (Sanskrit Gaṇaka), i.e. the present day Karaṇam (accountant-scribe) of South India.
