⁶ Al-Birūnī is wrong in stating that the symbol stands for the *Praṇava* or the auspicious sound *Om* (Sachau, *Alberuni’s India*, Part I, p. 173). The mistake is clear from its use by the Buddhists who had no regards for the *Praṇava* (cf. *Proc. IHC*, 1939, pp. 471 ff.; above, pp. 92-93, 95).
